Hindi should not be considered as the daughter of Sanskrit. Neither is it an enemy of Urdu or a handmaiden of English. To mark its lineage, if any, Hindi must be seen as the offspring of Indian modernity. Critiquing Hindi has to be the essential part of the larger critique of Indian modernity, the forces of which has shaped this wonderful language.
